IKEA - game changer

EN //

The news of IKEA possible switching to mushroom packaging could very well be a game changer for the packaging industry. Ecovative is one of the fristmovers of the new highly sustainable packaging material. Mushroom packaging from Ecovative consist of fungi and agricultural waste eg. corn stalks and be disposed of into nature without any harm. The product will have gone into the biological cycle within weeks becoming nutrients for new growth.

IKEA currently uses vast amounts of polystyrene in their packaging. Polystyrene, which basically is inflated refined oil, is highly polluting and almost impossible to dispose of. It will have a major positive impact on the environment if IKEA decides to swap the use of polystyrene with Mushroom Packaging.

In addition, IKEA, due. its size, could help to move the packaging industry towards biodegradable packaging by demanding a a sustainable solution like Mushroom Packaging. Also IKEA could be in a unique position to inspire other comapnies and industries to make the same changes and thereby increesing the demand on sustainable packaging materials.

I hope that this is part of a bigger paradigme shift in IKEA. Judging by rumours IKEA is also looking into takeback systems for their products which could suggest that IKEA is moving in to a circular business model.
